Lucia Mar to Begin Standardized Testing in Kindergarten

The Lucia Mar Unified School District has just given more ammunition to those who believe that students are being tested too much in today's public schools. The district recently decided to add the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills to a slew of standardized tests given to students across the district. This test will begin measuring student performance in Kindergarten, 2 years sooner than the STAR standardized assessments. This has obviously drawn criticism from many parents and educational groups who feel that there is already too much emphasis on standardized testing in schools. This has and will continue to be a hot button issue for many in the educational community and emotions run strong on both sides of the fence. Defenders of the program point out that the tests are not your traditional standardized exam. The test called the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills(DIBELS) was developed by the University of Oregon and has drawn praise from many in the educational community. The test measures a students ability to assess, blend and extract sounds, areas thought to impact a child's reading ability. Click here for more details on this story.
